Davis girls beat buzzer to top Beyer

Bre Castilleja scored on a layup with 2 seconds left in overtime Saturday to give Davis High a 43-41 victory over host Beyer.

The win puts the Spartans (10-9, 8-1 Modesto Metro Conference) one game ahead of the Patriots (8-13, 7-2) in the race for the league title.

With the game tied at 41 with 6 seconds left in overtime, Davis guard Erin Ovalle deflected a Beyer inbounds pass to Castilleja for the game-winning score.

The Spartans forced overtime by stepping up their defense in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Patriots 12-3 in the period. Beyer center Becca Biard missed a 15-footer at the end of regulation.

"They felt that they let it slip away," said Beyer coach Paul Basey, whose team held an 11-point lead during the third quarter.

Julie Aiello scored 26 points -- making five of her six 3-pointers in the third quarter -- for the Patriots.

Michelle Davis led the Spartans with 14 points and eight rebounds. Four of her teammates scored six or more points. Davis center Kashi Tomicich had seven blocks.

The two teams meet one more time, Feb. 12 at Davis High.
