Downey drought is over

The last time the Downey High girls basketball team won a Modesto Metro Conference game was Jan. 25, 2005.

Until Tuesday night.

Cassandra Calderon had 17 points, eight rebounds and six assists, leading the Knights (3-12, 1-2) to a 64-38 victory over Johansen at Downey High School. Erika Lua scored a game-high 20 points, and Jessica Hicks recorded eight of Downey's 25 steals.

Carly Koester scored 15 points to lead Johansen (1-12, 0-3).

BEYER 59, ENOCHS 38, at Beyer -- Becca Biard scored eight of her game-high 24 points in the first quarter, staking the Patriots (4-11, 3-0) to a lead they wouldn't relinquish in the victory over the Eagles (1-2 MMC).

Shanika Blunt scored 10 points to lead Enoch, which rallied for 18 fourth-quarter points.

MODESTO 33, DAVIS 26, at Modesto -- Panthers (6-9, 2-1 MMC) coach Pete Peterson said his team played its best team defense of the year in stopping the Spartans (2-1 MMC). Angelita Ochoa scored seven of her 12 points in the third quarter and Erika McCutcheon made two big baskets in that quarter -- Peterson said they gave Modesto the spark it needed.

SIERRA 53, CERES 34, at Sierra -- Ashley Tugade and Heather Scharmann combined for 14 of Sierra's 20 points in the first quarter as the Timberwolves (9-1, 3-0 Valley Oak League) took a 16-point lead over the Bulldogs (6-9, 1-2). Tugade made four of Sierra's six 3-pointers and scored a game-high 16 points.

WESTON RANCH 56, CENTRAL VALLEY 40, at Ceres -- Tempest Dawson scored 14 points to lead the Cougars (1-1 VOL) past the Hawks (4-8, 0-2). Julie Calderon led Central Valley with 15 points.

MANTECA 56, OAKDALE 25, at Oakdale -- Cassie Gause scored 17 of her game-high 20 points in the second quarter, when the Buffaloes (14-7, 2-1 VOL) outscored the Mustangs (4-11, 0-3) 26-6 to take a 30-8 halftime lead.

EAST UNION 65, SONORA 58, at East Union -- Ashley Rose and Rachel McDaniel, with 18 points each, led the Lancers (2-0 VOL) past the Wildcats (2-1 VOL). Adrianne LeBlanc had 25 points for Sonora, including seven 3-pointers. EU coach Jim Agostini said his team was able to spread the floor a bit more after Sonora got out of its zone in the middle of the fourth quarter.

MERCED 64, PITMAN 56, at Pitman -- Raschel Blackwell had 21 points in helping the Bears top the Pride in a CCC game. Tiare Jennings had 26 points and 13 rebounds for Pitman (2-1 Central California Conference).

TURLOCK 56, ATWATER 18, at Atwater -- The Falcons were just 4-for-53 from the field in losing to the Bulldogs (14-3, 2-0 CCC). Turlock coach Salinda Mabie had special praise for Rachel Finnegan (16 points) and Samantha Bertomen (23 points).
