Waterford twosome guides way in Southern League victory over Denair

WATERFORD -- It was her team's rebounding, said Waterford High girls basketball coach Julie Longworth.

But Nycole McHenry's and Kendra Curtis' scoring had a little bit to do with it as well.

McHenry and Curtis combined for 34 points and 28 rebounds as the Wildcats held off Denair for a 54-51 Southern League victory at Waterford High on Tuesday night.

McHenry had 18 points and 17 rebounds, while Curtis added 16 points and 11 boards.

Waterford jumped out to an 18-5 first-quarter lead and held on. The Wildcats never lost the lead, although Denair closed to within three points at game's end.

Jessi Cole scored 23 points to lead the Coyotes.

MARIPOSA 43, DELHI 24, at Mariposa -- Morgan Foley scored nine points, pulled down nine rebounds and had five steals to lead the Grizzlies (4-4, 2-0) past the Hawks in a Southern League game.

Foley's teammates Joree Peracca and Bianca Abule chipped in with nine points apiece.

LE GRAND 43, TURLOCK CHRISTIAN 37, at Le Grand -- Jennifer Hansen scored 20 points, including all nine of her team's points in the fourth quarter, as the Bulldogs (3-3, 1-0) got past the Eagles. Hansen, who also had 10 rebounds, scored 15 of her 20 points in the second half.

Bianca Davoodian led Turlock Christian with 13 points.


ESCALON 46, CENTRAL CATHOLIC 37 (OT), at Escalon -- Kaitlyn Brayton scored a game-high 17 points as the Cougars (5-5) got past the Raiders (4-6) in overtime. Escalon outscored Central Catholic 15-6 in the extra period.

Sophomore forward Taylor Hulsebosch scored 13 points to lead Central Catholic, while Devon Lapenias added 12.

The last time these teams played, the game went into overtime as well. But the Raiders beat Escalon 35-33 in that one.

GOLDEN VALLEY 54, DOWNEY 35, at Merced -- Porsha Grayson continued her hot streak by pouring in 21 points as the Cougars (6-6) rolled past the Knights (2-6). GV coach Matt Thissen said Grayson was one of only a few players on the court who were making shots.

Laura Lopez was just as hot for Downey, scoring a game-high 27 points.

LOS BANOS 51, ENOCHS 26, at Los Banos -- Brooke Silva scored 14 of her game-high 20 points in the first half as the Tigers (8-2) pulled away from the Eagles. Teammate Jessica DeArmon scored 10 of her 12 in the first half.

Stephanie Bell and Shanika Blunt each scored 10 points for Enochs.

BEAR CREEK 44, JOHANSEN 26, at Johansen -- The Vikings (1-7) struggled from the field and the free-throw line, where they were 4-for-17, in a non-league loss to the Bruins (5-5).

Carly Koester led Johansen with nine points, followed by Alexandra Cariker's eight. Jazmin Gutierrez led Bear Creek with 15 points.

LINDEN 43, PATTERSON 38, at Patterson -- Melissa Orgon scored 13 points and Jordan Baca 11, including three 3-pointers, as the Lions held off the Tigers (3-5). Shelby Yamamoto scored 13 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead Patterson.
