Turlock High rode strong play from its doubles teams to a 5-3 victory over West of Tracy on Monday in the first round of the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I tennis playoffs.
The host Bulldogs (12-8) clinched the victory with a win at No. 1 doubles, and their No. 3 doubles team won to help Turlock advance.
Turlock, the Central California Conference co-champion with Merced and the CCC's No. 1 seed, will play St. Francis at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Sacramento.
Turlock's top doubles team of Lauren LaVelle and Kaitlyn Ireland defeated Erika Sembrano and Ashley Lesaga 6-1, 7-5. LaVelle and Ireland trailed 5-4 in the second set before winning the next three games to close out the match.
"Right when it was getting dark, they stepped up," Turlock coach Verek Visaraga said. "Our first and third doubles really kind of took care of business."
No. 3 doubles team Meghan Sims and Amanda Cervantes of Turlock won their match 6-2, 6-0, and the No. 2 doubles duo of Liz Arakelian and Samantha Littlefield split two sets before it got dark.
Turlock's three doubles teams are a combined 38-4 this season.
Aubree Brenda, Ellen Serpa and Monica Duarte won in singles for the Bulldogs.
LODI 8, BEYER 1, at Lodi -- The Patriots managed only a win in doubles in losing to the Flames (20-2).
ST. MARY'S 9, MERCED 0, at Stockton -- The Rams (21-4) surrendered just nine games in singles to blank the Bears (12-3).
VANDEN 9, CERES 0, at Fairfield -- Vanden didn't lose a set in singles in blanking Ceres.
