Local Digest: Molina's three goals lift MJC men

Martin Molina has been on a roll.

The Modesto Junior College forward scored two goals and assisted on two others Tuesday in the men's soccer team's 5-3 nonconference victory over College of the Sequoias.

It was only the third time this season the Pirates (8-4-3) have scored more than three goals.

Molina has scored five goals and recorded eight assists this season. Both his goals Tuesday came in the second half. Modesto led 1-0 at halftime on one of Victor Perez's two goals.

Sequoias went ahead 3-2 in the second half, scoring three goals in 15 minutes. Garren Montes then tied the game on an assist from Molina and Juan Leon put Modesto back on top. With eight minutes remaining, Molina gave Modesto an insurance goal.

The Pirates play host to Big 8 Conference opponent Delta on Friday at 3 p.m.

DIABLO VALLEY 3, MJC 1, at Pleasant Hill -- No longer eyeing a Big 8 Conference title, the Pirates are now playing for home-field advantage in the playoffs.

Modesto rotated three players in goal. With all his true goalies injured, coach Steve Aristotelous said the Pirates (9-3-1, 3-3-1 Big 8) often play "panicked" on defense.

"We jumped out early, but we had a real difficult time holding on to the ball," Aristotelous said. "They had corner kicks and extra chances. Those things are going to catch up to you."

Modesto's Carly Genzoli scored the first goal of the game on an assist from Lucero Villasenor. The Pirates play at Delta on Friday at 3 p.m.
