Roundup: Modesto girls 10-0 in league

The Modesto High volleyball team proved its place atop the Modesto Metro Conference.

In a match that could have forced a first-place tie in the MMC, the Panthers kept their league record spotless with a three-game sweep of Downey on Wednesday night at the Panther Palace.

Modesto won 27-25, 25-17, 25-18.

Modesto (16-2, 10-0 MMC) had big games from Karen Wall, Ashley Nickell and Heather Sinclair. Wall led the Panthers in assists (22) and aces (five). Nickell tied for the lead in kills with seven and digs with three. Sinclair also had seven kills and led the team in blocks (two).

Elise Neville led Downey (8-2 MMC) in kills (six) and blocks (six).

ENOCHS 3, JOHANSEN 2, at Johansen -- Casia Collins had 18 kills and Renee Matosich 17 digs to help the Eagles (3-7 MMC) to a 23-25, 26-24, 17-25, 25-19, 15-10 win. Emily Myers had 17 kills and 36 assists for the Vikings (4-6).

GOLDEN VALLEY 3, BUHACH COLONY 1, at Golden Valley -- Kaitlin Davidson had 10 kills and Ali Langford 14 digs for the Cougars (6-1 Central California Conference) in a 17-25, 25-21, 25-16, 25-17 win. Becca Osmer had eight kills and 25 digs for Buhach (6-1 CCC).

Boys Soccer

JOHANSEN 3, ENOCHS 1, at Johansen -- Rafael Britmartins had a goal and an assist for the Vikings (4-4-2 MMC).

RIPON CHR. 3, HUGHSON 0, at Hughson -- Jody Hoag had two goals and an assist for RC.

CENTRAL CATHOLIC 1, ORESTIMBA 1, at Orestimba -- Alec Vitale of Central scored in the first half on a sliding kick off an Alex Case cross. Then Andres Bueno scored for Orestimba.

Boys Cross Country

MODESTO 18, JOHANSEN 45, at Legion Park -- Owen Deming (17 minutes, 18 seconds) and Nic Heffe (17:24) went 1-2 for Modesto; Jacob Guzman (17:26) took third for the Vikings.

BEYER 15, DOWNEY 50, at Legion Park -- Winner Max Wu's 17:13 on the 3.03-mile course paced the Patriots.

Girls Cross Country

BEYER 15, DOWNEY 47, at Legion Park -- Crystal Esparza led the way for the Patriots -- her 18:24 was her fastest time of the year on the 3.03-mile Legion Park course. Teammate Amber Filpot was second in 20:59.

MODESTO 16, JOHANSEN 44, at Legion Park -- Katie Drueen of the Panthers won by 37 seconds in 19:43.

Golf

SHUTLER FIRES 35, at Manteca Park -- Sierra High's Julie Shutler carded a 2-under-par 35 as the Timberwolves beat Sonora 241-303 and Manteca beat Sonora 276-303.
