Local Colleges: MJC women fall 3-2

This is an unusual spot for the Modesto Junior College women's soccer team to be in.

After a scoreless tie with Consumnes River on Friday, the Pirates lost to Santa Rosa 3-2 at home Tuesday.

Winless in two consecutive games, that's a first for Modesto (8-2-1, 3-1-1 Big 8 Conference).

"Two goals in any game, for us that's usually a win," MJC coach Steve Aristotelous said. "We're going to have to get more sound defensively."

That's partly because the Pirates' last line of defense -- the goalkeeper -- will be a field player the rest of the season.

With three goalies suffering major injuries, defender Makayla Whitney was pressed into goal Tuesday. She had eight saves, including one she punched over the goal late in the first half.

Amy Cohen scored Santa Rosa's third goal with four minutes remaining, dribbling by three Modesto defenders and sliding the ball past Whitney.

That was the second time in the game a Bear Cub had dodged three defenders en route to a goal. Nicki Poole scored Santa Rosa's other two goals, the first in the 39th minute.

Modesto tied the game at 1-1 in the 65th minute when Vanessa Stanfield finished a Carly Genzoli pass.

In a flurry of activity, Poole scored five minutes later. But Modesto quickly answered in the next minute when Genzoli fired a Kelsey Barnes feed past Bear Cub keeper Alex Fisher.

Aristotelous compared losing a full-time goalkeeper -- which he considers a skill position -- to losing a quarterback in football. Defender Kacey Ball looked drained after the loss, which she described as discouraging. That had more to do with the strength of Santa Rosa (6-2-3, 5-0 Big 8) than who was stationed in front of the net.

"Makayla did an awesome job," Ball said. "The shots they got would have gone in against any goalie."

TAFT 2, MJC 1, at Modesto -- The Cougars scored with 10 seconds left to hand Modesto (7-4-2) the nonconference loss. Taft (7-3-2) is the defending Central Valley Conference champion.

Victor Perez kept the Pirates from getting shut out, scoring on a free kick from 35 feet out. His shot hit the left post and bounced in during the 85th minute.
