Bret Harte High runners Matt Airola and Katie O'Connor led the boys and girls races from start to finish Wednesday in the Escalon Invitational at Woodward Reservoir.
Airola was clocked in 17 minutes, 9 seconds over the 3.1-mile course and O'Connor 21:27. They helped the Bullfrogs edge the Escalon boys (43 points to 46) and girls (49 points to 51) for the team championships.
Hughson's Cirilo Chavez (18:01) and Central Catholic's Roman Acosta (18:16) trailed Airola. Linden's Amanda Remington (21:56) and Escalon's Pearl Rivers (23:01) finished 2-3 in the girls race.
DAVIS BOYS 27, MODESTO 28, at Legion Park -- The Spartans (3-0 MMC) handed the Panthers (2-1) their first loss since the Modesto Metro Conference was formed in 2004.
Matt Maldonado (16:05) and Marty Pyatt (16:09) finished 1-2 for Modesto (2-1 MMC), but Davis (3-0) took the 3-4-5-6 spots with runners Roberto Rosas (16:16), Ronnie Bruce (16:31), Chris Izquierdo (16:33) and Victor Vieyra (16:35).
JOHANSEN BOYS 27, DOWNEY 28, at East La Loma Park -- The Knights' Ethan Keantbe won the 3-mile race in 17:51.89, but the victorious Vikings (1-2) got a second-place finish from Javier Baca (18:13.01) and also took the 4-5-6 spots.
DOWNEY 3, JOHANSEN 0, at Downey -- Jose Villa had two goals and an assist, and goalkeeper Diego Vierra made nine saves for the Knights (5-1-2 MMC).
PATTERSON 8, GUSTINE 0, at Patterson -- Noe Flores had two goals and Gerardo Cortez three assists as the Tigers (15-2, 7-0 Western Athletic Conference) beat the Redskins (0-5-2). Patterson keeper Luis Torres had to make only one save.
HILMAR 9, ORESTIMBA 1, at Hilmar -- Jordan Bettencourt, Lucas Behem and Anthony Martin scored twice for the Yellowjackets (11-2-2, 5-2-1 WAC), and goalkeeper Francisco Chavez made 11 saves.
CENTRAL CATHOLIC 2, LIVINGSTON 1, at Central Catholic -- The Raiders, down 1-0, got goals in the last 10 minutes from Kris Zizzo and Alec Vitale. The Wolves opened the scoring at the 70-minute mark.
MERCED 3, ATWATER 2, at Atwater -- Kelsie Hanson had 11 kills, Laura Poole 22 digs and Laura Meller six aces in helping the Bears (14-6, 4-1 Central California Conference) stop the Falcons (6-3, 2-3). Kahealani Smith had 11 kills and Daniella Vineyard 18 digs for the Falcons (6-3, 2-3).
PITMAN 3, LOS BANOS 1, at Los Banos -- The Pride (5-6, 1-4 CCC) prevailed 25-10, 23-25, 25-23, 28-26 in an exciting back-and-forth match. Tanya Gemperle had eight kills and two aces and Pam Buck 11 digs for Pitman. Jessica DeArmon had 22 kills for the Tigers (10-16, 1-5 CCC).
RIPON 3, HUGHSON 0, at Ripon -- Kirsten Duren had 24 digs and Meredith Perkins 22 for the Indians (12-6, 6-1 Trans-Valley League) in a 25-10, 25-5, 25-22 victory.
