Roundup: Davis narrowly races by Modesto at Legion

Davis High handed the Modesto High boys cross country team its first dual meet loss since the Modesto Metro Conference was formed in 2004.

In a reversal of last year's score, the Spartans edged the Panthers 27-28 at Legion Park in what Davis coach Matt Soderlund called "an exciting race with two amazing teams."

Matt Maldonado (16 minutes, 5 seconds) and Marty Pyatt (16:09) finished 1-2 for Modesto (2-1 MMC) on the 3.03-mile course.

But Davis (3-0) took the 3-4-5-6 spots with Roberto Rosas (16:16), Ronnie Bruce (16:31), Chris Izquierdo (16:33) and Victor Vieyra (16:35).

"Our guys have been working harder than I've ever seen them," Soderlund said. "They are focused. They are a team in every sense, from the first to the last runner."
