High School Roundup: Goal pads Downey's lead, but not scorer's grade

Downey High midfielder Salvador Martinez smiled with his hands raised after he put the Knights up 2-0 with 10 minutes to play.

"Extra credit?" he screamed toward the sideline to his math teacher, Chris Chilles.

Chilles smiled and responded, "I don't give extra credit."

Salvador settled for the goal as host Downey took down Beyer 2-0 Wednesday in Modesto Metro Conference soccer action.

"I got the ball, saw the opening and got the shot," Martinez said of his first goal this season. "I'm not too worried (about the extra credit)."

Downey forward Jose Villa scored the first goal midway through the second half on a cross-field pass from Josh Dickinson.

Coach Adrian Romero said Downey (5-2-1, 3-0-1 MMC) played better in the second half but needs to work on fundamentals.

"We didn't do as well as we wanted to," said Romero, whose team battled a headwind in the second half. "We had trouble getting the ball in the frame (the area surrounding the goal)."

Beyer goalkeeper Matt Noakes had 12 saves on 29 shots.

Patriots coach Aaron Billington said he was proud of his keeper, but the defense needs to limit opportunities.

"We're a young team, and preventing that comes with a little more experience," Billington said.

Beyer (1-7-2, 0-2-1 MMC) had chances to score in the second half.

Patriots defender John Normoly won battles for two consecutive balls, intercepting the second to set up a fast break. He aired it out to forward Mitchell Simons, who passed to Ivan Nicholls for a shot that was wide left.

Downey goalkeeper Canek Ambriz had four saves.
