Local Digest: Downey High volleyball team stays unbeaten in league

Downey High prevailed Monday night in an early-season Modesto Metro Conference volleyball clash matching teams with 2-0 league records.

Madeline Liddle had 10 kills and Kellie Kincheloe contributed 18 digs as the Knights handed Johansen a 25-22, 25-22, 25-10 loss.

Kristie Ortega had nine kills and 18 digs for Johansen and Emily Myers 11 aces, 10 blocks and 25 assists.

"Their hard work is finally paying off," Downey coach Allison Hylla said of her team. "They were pretty intense ... a lot of long rallies and close games."

BEYER 3, ENOCHS 0, at Enochs -- Kasie Martinez had 12 kills for the Patriots (1-2 MMC), who stopped Enochs 25-17, 25-19, 25-18.

MODESTO CHR. 3, RIVERBANK 1, at Modesto Christian -- Katie Allen had 12 kills and Lynelle King 27 digs for MC (4-6, 1-1 Trans-Valley League) in its 20-25, 28-26, 25-21, 25-23 win.

Modesto Christian coach Norine Thornock, explaining how her team turned it around after the first set, said, "Basically we told them to put the ball into play and make them (Riverbank) make the mistakes, instead of going for the kill."

Alyssa Adams had 10 kills and Kendra Barth five aces for Riverbank.

RIPON 3, HUGHSON 0, at Hughson -- Kirsten Duren had six kills and four aces for Ripon (2-0 TVL) and Meredith Perkins 17 digs in a 25-9, 25-16, 25-16 win.

ESCALON 3, RIPON CHR. 1, at Escalon -- Escalon (2-1 TVL) trailed 19-13 in the third set when a big block from Vicki Costa turned things around, and the Cougars went on to win 25-20, 24-26, 27-25, 25 14.

BIG VALLEY CHR. 3, JIM ELLIOT CHR. 0, at Jim Elliot -- Anika Rigney had 15 digs and Viki Nyberg seven aces in BVC's 25-9 25-18 25-18 win.

BUHACH COLONY 3, GOLDEN VALLEY 1, at Buhach Colony -- Becca Osmer had 12 kills and Kayla Clarot 20 digs as Buhach won 25-23, 25-21, 23-25, 25-20 in a Central California Conference opener.

ATWATER 3, PITMAN 1, at Pitman -- Kahea Smith had 10 kills for Atwater (1-0 CCC) and Ali Copeland 27 digs in a 25-23, 25-22, 24-26, 25-16 victory. Tanya Gemperle had 13 kills and Sara Stuart seven aces for Pitman (0-1 CCC).

DELHI 3, WATERFORD 3 -- Juan Gutierrez of Waterford (2-0-1 Southern League) scored from 18 yards out just 30 seconds into the game, his first of two goals. Delhi is 0-2-1.

PATTERSON 8, GUSTINE 0, at Gustine -- Rodrigo Aldana had all three of his goals in the first half for the Tigers (3-0 Western Athletic Conference).

HILMAR 5, ORESTIMBA 0, at Orestimba -- Lucas Behem got Hilmar (8-2-1) going with a goal two minutes into the game.

ATWATER 3, PLEASANT GROVE 0 -- Jorge Carmona, Julian Horta and Jose Hernandez scored for Atwater (11-2-3) and Edmundo Garcia had two assists.

LE GRAND 2, MARIPOSA 2 -- Le Grand coach Frank Ferreira said, "Mariposa was up 2--1 at half. We adjusted to a more aggressive attack that was the difference maker in our salvaging the tie."

Alejandro Rosas and Santos Rodriguez scored for Le Grand, and Daniel Buskeness and Jason Buskeness for Mariposa. Both teams are 2-0-1 in the SL.

Girls Golf

DAVIS 302, DOWNEY 321, at Creekside -- Jessica Munoz led Davis (4-3 MMC) with a 50. Four of the five Davis girls had personal bests -- Julia Oman (59) by 12 shots.
