High school roundup: Golden Valley earns draw against Atwater

ATWATER -- The Central California Conference has a race on its hands for the boys soccer title, after Golden Valley played defending champion Atwater to a 1-1 draw on Thursday.

Fabian Miramontes' goal midway through the first half gave GV a 1-1 tie. The Cougars (0-0-1 CCC) had a chance to go ahead, but Atwater (1-0-1) goalie Fernando Rios blocked a penalty kick.

GV starts five sophomores, GV coach Lee Shaw said, and sweeper Bill Castello turned back numerous Atwater scoring threats.

BUHACH COLONY 1, PITMAN 0, at Buhach Colony -- The Pitman goalie dropped the ball and Sergio Lopez of Buhach (8-1-2, 2-0 CCC) took advantage, scoring the game's only goal in the 33rd minute of play.

TURLOCK 4, LOS BANOS 1, at Turlock -- Tristin Silva had three goals for Turlock (1-1 CCC) and David Mulgado three assists.

CENTRAL VALLEY 2, OAKDALE 2, at Ceres -- The third-ranked Mustangs (8-4-4, 1-0-1 Valley Oak League) scored with eight minutes left for a tie with the Hawks (0-0-2).

SIERRA 5, SONORA 2, at Sierra -- Brian Guzman had three goals for Sierra (3-5-2, 2-0 VOL) -- in the second half he struck in the 72nd and 78th minutes.

"Brian lit us up in the second half," said Sierra coach Jose Montes, whose team led 2-1 at the half.

RIVERBANK 5, MODESTO CHR. 0, at Modesto Christian -- Ramiro Calderon of Riverbank scored on a 55-yard shot in the 55th minute.

RIPON 9, HUGHSON 1, at Hughson -- Oliver Kolwitz had three goals and an assist and Joel Robles two goals and three assists for Ripon (7-2-1, 1-1 TVL).

ESCALON 4, RIPON CHR. 0, at Escalon -- 8-1-3, 2-0) -- Armando Becerra, Ramon Valencia, Jose Bueno and Francisco Martinez scored for Escalon (8-1-3, 2-0 TVL).

LE GRAND 3, TURLOCK CHR. 0, at Le Grand -- Santos Rodriguez and Luis Rodriguez scored for Le Grand (2-0 SL).

Boys Water Polo

GOLDEN VALLEY 11, PITMAN 7, at Merced -- Case Viehuizen had four goals for Golden Valley (1-1 CCC) and Josh Day four for the Pride.

Girls Golf

SIERRA 257, SONORA 310, at Mountain Springs GC -- Julie Shutler fired a 3-over-par 39 for Sierra.

ESCALON 154, RIVERBANK 190, at Escalon GC -- Brittney Brunetti had one birdie in a 3-over 34, her best round of the season, for Escalon (7-1, 5-0 VFL).

Volleyball

PATTERSON 3, CENTRAL CATHOLIC 2, at Central Catholic -- Patterson (5-6, 1-1 WAC) led 11-5 in Game 5, then Central got within 11-10 before Patterson closed out a 26-24, 12-25, 17-25, 25-7, 15-10 victory. "Their service game was the difference after we closed to within one in the final game," said Central coach Angela Quinteros. "They got the ball back and it was over."

SONORA 3, MANTECA 0, at Manteca -- Allison Holt had 10 kills for Sonora (7-0, 1-0 VOL) and Maesey Henington 11 digs and four aces in the 25-20, 25-14, 25-15 win. Marissa Navarro had 10 kills and three blocks for Manteca (2-5, 0-1).

RIPON CHR. 3, MODESTO CHR. 0, at Ripon Christian -- Cassie Fortune and Kailee Adams led the defense for RC (5-2, 1-0 TVL) in its 25-8, 25-23, 25-18 triumph.

HILMAR 3, GUSTINE 0, at Hilmar -- Caitlin Benning had 10 kills for the Yellowjackets (10-0, 2-0 WAC) in their 25-8, 25-5, 25-9 victory, Madison Harris six aces and Lindsey Mendes 11 digs.

TURLOCK CHR. 3, WATERFORD 0, at Turlock Christian -- Morgan Andre had seven aces for TC (3-3, 1-0 SL) in 25-13, 25-16, 25-12 win.

Girls Tennis

MERCED 3, LOS BANOS 3 (Mercd wins on basis of games won, 67-58), at Merced -- The Bears' Stephanie Isenberg/Priyanka Patel won 7-5, 4-6, 6-1 in No. 2 doubles. Sara Hedrick of Los Banos won 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in No. 1 singles, the day's other three-setter.

PITMAN 5, BUHACH COLONY 1, at Atwater -- Heather Cotter defeated Anna Morrow 6-2, 6-1 in No. 1 singles for Pitman (5-1, 2-1 CCC).
