High School Roundup: Lancers roll to title in Merced

MERCED -- Undefeated East Union High rolled to a 48-stroke victory in the sixth annual Merced High Girls Golf Invitational on Monday at Merced Golf & Country Club.

Golden Valley junior Belen Hernandez, the tournament medalist last year, shot an 81 to tie Julie Shutler of Sierra for the honor.

The Lancers, led by Krista Clark's 11-over-par 83, had a 449 team total to top the 17-school field. Brionna Goulart shot an 85, Lindsey Shoot a 93, Ellen Parker a 93 and Amanda Agostini a 95 for East Union.

Emily Szabo shot an 85 and Spencer Heller an 87 to lead Turlock. Allyssa Pena shot an 86 to help Johansen to a third-place tie with Central Catholic at 514. Sierra was fifth with a 531.


ESCALON 3, OAKDALE 0, at Escalon -- Kaitlyn Braten had 24 digs and Vicki Costa 10 kills as the Cougars (6-0) swept the Mustangs (7-1) 25-21, 25-18, 25-21 in a battle of unbeaten teams. Jaci Powell had 20 kills for Oakdale.

MODESTO 3, BEYER 0, at Beyer -- The Panthers came back from a 21-11 deficit in the third game to sweep the Patriots 25-22, 25-18, 26-24 in a Modesto Metro Conference opener. Karen Wall had 18 assists and six aces for Modesto. Kaycee Martinez led Beyer with 13 kills.

DOWNEY 3, ENOCHS 0, at Downey -- Madeline Liddle's 10 assists and seven digs helped the Knights (8-1) beat the Eagles (5-7) 25-16, 25-21, 25-13 in an MMC opener.

LE GRAND 3, GUSTINE 0, at Gustine -- Jennifer Hansen had 10 kills and five blocks for the Bulldogs (4-0) in their 26-24, 25-22, 25-9 sweep of the Redskins (3-4). Veronica Perry had 17 kills and eight aces for Gustine.


PATTERSON 9, ORESTIMBA 0, at Patterson -- Playing a Western Athletic Conference opener on Patterson's new artificial turf, Sergio Hinojosa recorded a hat trick to lift the Tigers (5-2) over the Warriors. Hinojosa also had an assist.

LE GRAND 3, DELHI 2, at Delhi -- Roberto Zaragoza scored the go-ahead goal with 10 minutes remaining to lift the Bulldogs (1-0 Southern League) over the Hawks (0-1 SL).
