SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) -- Riley Thompson, Jeffrey Passantino and Riley McCauley combined for a shutout as the South Bend Cubs defeated the Lansing Lugnuts 6-0 on Saturday.
Thompson (1-0) went five scoreless innings, allowing four hits while striking out five and walking one to pick up the win. Fitz Stadler (1-1) went three innings, allowing five runs and seven hits in the Midwest League game. He also struck out one and walked one.
In the bottom of the second, South Bend took the lead on a single by Christopher Morel that scored Nelson Velazquez. The Cubs then added four runs in the third and a run in the sixth. In the third, Tyler Durna hit a two-run double, while D.J. Artis hit an RBI double in the sixth.
Velazquez doubled and singled twice, scoring two runs in the win.
The Lugnuts were held off the scoreboard for the second time this season, while the Cubs' staff recorded their second shutout of the year.
