Today our nation celebrates its independence, and most valley communities are swathed in red, white and blue. The annual Modesto parade is this morning, and there's a big fireworks show tonight at the county fairground in Turlock. Here are some highlights:
Modesto's annual Fourth of July celebration. Downtown parade is at 10 a.m. Awards will be announced immediately after the parade at the judges stand, located on the corner of 11th and I streets. Go to www.modestojulyparade.com.
Turlock's "Red, White and Boom" Celebration kicks off at 5 p.m. at the Stanislaus County Fairground. There will be activities for children, a bike rodeo, entertainment and food vendors. Fireworks will begin at 9:30 p.m. Free. Go to www.turlockchamber.com and click on events.
Ripon parade. Ripon's first Arch to Arch parade starts at 6 p.m. at the historic Ripon arch on Stockton Street. There will be festivities and food vendors at Ripon Elementary School. A fireworks display is planned for 9:15 p.m. Free. Go to www.riponchamber.org and click on calendar.
Manteca. Manteca's celebration includes a 10 a.m. parade on Main Street.
Gustine. Gustine Chamber of Commerce hosts a 10:30 a.m. Main Street parade. Activities at Henry Miller Park include food and beverage booths and bullfights. Fireworks are at dusk at Gustine High School football field.
