An early morning house fire destroyed one Ceres home and sent a family fleeing from a neighboring house firefighters were able to save.
Callers in the area reported smoke coming from the 2000 block of Poplar Street shortly before 1:24 a.m., and by the time firefighters got there, flames and smoke had taken over half of the house, said police and firefighters.
Police had already evacuated the family from the neighboring home, said Capt. Eric Holly of the Ceres Fire Department. He said the house on fire appeared to be vacant.
Crews from Modesto and Stanislaus Consolidated helped fight the fire but weren’t able to save the house. Holly estimated it as a total loss.
Heat from the fire burst a window of the neighboring home and flames spread to the window frame but the family was able to return by about 4:30 a.m., Holly estimated. Ceres fire crews were on the scene until 5:10 a.m. The cause is under investigation.
