MERCED -- Grammy-nominated artist Mitchell Charles Johnson, also known in the hip-hop world as Paperboy, may be in hot water again after a second drug-related arrest in Merced late Wednesday night.
The first one was last June.
Johnson was arrested after Merced police stopped his car at 11:10 p.m. in the 2200 block of Q Street after noticing that the 35-year-old rapper was driving with a broken rear brake light, said police Lt. Bimley West.
Officer Moses Nelson approached Johnson's car, a 1994 Lincoln Mark VIII, and noticed the aroma of marijuana, West said. Police found less than an ounce of pot in Johnson's car, in addition to a bottle of prescription medication that wasn't in his name, West said.
Johnson was booked into Merced County Jail on misdemeanor charges of marijuana possession and transportation, illegal possession of prescription medication and driving on a suspended license. He was released after posting $10,000 bail.
Salvatore Sciandra, the Fresno attorney who represented Johnson after his previous marijuana arrest, declined to comment. Sciandra said he did not know if he was going to represent Johnson in his most recent legal predicament.
During his heyday in the hip-hop world, Johnson achieved fame for his song, "Ditty," which garnered him a Grammy nomination for rap solo performance and a No. 24 spot on Billboard's coveted Hot 100 chart in 1993.
Johnson has previously stated on his official Web site that he "smokes Mary Jane" but doesn't sell it.
