KEYES -- California Highway Patrol officers Monday were looking for the man who fled the scene of a Sunday night traffic collision that killed a Ceres woman and seriously injured her husband southwest of Keyes.
Betty Tackett, 73, was pronounced dead at the scene; Deon Tackett, 74, suffered major injuries and was taken by ambulance to Doctors Medical Center in Modesto, according to Stanislaus County coroner officials. The Tacketts were both wearing their seat belts.
About 8:20 p.m. on Sunday, the Tacketts were in a 2002 Ford SUV going south about 55 mph on Central Avenue and approaching Taylor Road, the CHP reported. Deon Tackett was driving and Betty Tackett was in the front passenger seat.
The unknown man was driving a 1991 Ford pickup west on Taylor Road and failed to yield the right of way to the Tacketts’ SUV, the CHP reported. The front of the SUV struck the pickup’s right side, which forced both vehicles to leave the road and hit a utility pole and some grapevines.
The pickup driver ran away, leaving the truck behind. The CHP had not confirmed on Monday night who was driving the pickup, but officers were investigating leads.
