A fire early Saturday morning gutted a building used by military veterans in the Modesto area.
Burbank-Paradise firefighters responded at about 3:30 a.m. to the blaze at VFW Post 3199 on West Hatch Road. There were no injuries, but officials said today the 2,000-square-foot building was a total loss.
The cause still is under investigation and no damage estimate was released.
The building opened in the mid-1940s, members say. It featured a meeting room, kitchen, bar and storage areas. It was a popular gathering place for hundreds of veterans from the region.
