John G. Lucas: Stop using drones to kill

This nation has just celebrated its 238th year of independence. We still are seeking to form a more perfect union. However, there is a problem we can solve right now: Stop our government’s predator drone attacks.

Predator drones are flown remotely by U.S. military and CIA pilots based in our country and around the world.

Predator drone attacks started under President George W. Bush’s administration. President Barack Obama has not only continued these attacks, but has expanded them to Pakistan, Somalia and Yemen. In all of the attacks, our government is acting as judge, jury and executioner – in our names!

From 2004 through March 2013, some 3,100 Pakistani men, women and children have been killed by U.S. drones, according to Pitch Interactive. Approximately 1.5 percent of those killed have been considered “high-profile al-Qaida targets.” According to research data done by Charles Tan ( academia.edu), through March 14, the U.S. drone attacks have killed 747 people in Yemen and 33 in Somalia.

Drone attacks are immoral and violate international law; they create hatred and more violence. Obama can stop these attacks. Let him, and all political leaders, know we want them to end.

John G. Lucas, Modesto
