The current budget issue facing the nation is deplorable. American democracy was held hostage by a minority of politicians. As citizens concerned about the world, however, it is important to remember to think globally and act locally.
Yes on Measure X is not only sensible, but it shows concern for each other. When we invest in our city and our safety, we are investing in each other. Of course Measure X is flawed; we need a parcel tax, not a sales tax. Unfortunately, due to voter ignorance and apathy, the parcel tax is unlikely. At the present time, a sales tax is the appropriate avenue for change.
The funds are necessary for Modesto. Perhaps some money will be wasted, but it is important to remember that what is judged government waste is an ideological position. If citizens are concerned about this, remember that being an active citizen is more than grumbling at the ballot box during election cycles. There are many other ways to be involved, such as attending council and other public meetings.
