I’d like to congratulate Stanislaus County and Valley Recovery Resources for recently being recognized with the California Counties Innovation Award, the top honor given by the California State Association of Counties (CSAC). The award recognizes a unique partnership that saved the vitally important Clean and Sober living program. Budget cuts almost forced the closure of this program, which allows children to remain living with their mothers as the women undergo drug and alcohol treatment. Recognizing the need to continue the program, and the availability of state and federal grants, the county and local community leaders formed a new nonprofit and raised the local matching funds needed to keep the grants in place and the program open.
When I became president of CSAC I declared this to be the Year of the Child in County Government. I am gratified to see that more families are intact because of Stanislaus County’s can-do spirit. The innovative approach shows how counties keep delivering for their residents – even in the face of increasing demands and difficult budgets. Congratulations and keep up the good work.
