The preamble to the Constitution is, in essence, our country's mission statement of how we want our government to be.
"In order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote general welfare " The amendments are supposed to support the preamble and the police and legal system support the laws that, in turn, support the preamble.
The right to keep and bear arms is secondary to insuring domestic tranquility and promoting the general welfare.
Assault weapons are not for hunting; they have been used by military and the public as weapons of mass destruction. As such, they should be eliminated from all but the police and military to help insure domestic tranquility and to protect other innocents from the next rampage.
As our president said, we can and must do better. Better means eliminating access to such weapons, improving upon our mental health services, greatly reducing the amount of violence in our society (TV and movies, smack-down bouts), and further limiting the access and influence of lobbyists.
We have laws regarding seat belts, cigarettes, and alcohol that were written to insure domestic tranquility. It is time to do the same regarding assault weapons.
