I find it appalling that The Bee finds it necessary to print the pay scales and retirement benefits of different agencies. The most recent article (Average government worker's pay falls 4 percent," March 11, Page A-6) gave specific information about the retirement benefits and pay of the California Highway Patrol. The article appears to suggest that the compensation is not deserved.
The men and women in law enforcement have to work overtime to protect and serve everyone. Public safety comes first. These same people also deal with things that most other professions do not ever have to see. This is stressful and takes a toll on them physically and mentally. These people also earn vacation and sick pay, like most other professions. The big payout that the story referred to is an accumulation of all that they have earned. It was not just given to them.
I wish that this paper would not portray law enforcement agencies as having these benefits and pay handed to them on a silver platter. These people are willing to lay down their lives on a daily basis to protect people like you and me.
