For years, Stanislaus County residents have prayed our animal shelter would be cleaned up and become more animal- friendly. Supervisors repeatedly have said the county was hard at work on that goal.
Sadly, that has not happened. While at a local pet store, I talked with another shopper with her new puppy. She said adopting the dog from our shelter cost her $1,000, in part to treat the severe case of kennel cough it caught at the shelter.
We keep hearing cats and dogs are healthy when taken there but often leave deadly sick. Why can't management protect the poor animals? A wise spiritual leader said you can judge a society by the way its treats its animals. What does our shelter say about Stanislaus County?
