A letter published on July 11 ("Wandering child shouldn't wait") criticized the Modesto Police Department for taking an hour to respond when a child was found wandering in the roadway. SR-911 dispatch records indicate the call was received from the California Highway Patrol dispatch as a transfer call at 11:45 a.m. (cell phone calls currently route to the CHP dispatch). The call was dispatched within 1 minute. The first officer arrived on scene at 11:57 a.m. From call receipt to the first officer's arrival was 11 minutes, 28 seconds.
SR-911 received no return telephone calls regarding this incident. If other calls were made during our response, CHP dispatch likely received them. The men and women of the Modesto Police Department and SR-911 provide tremendous service to our community and I deeply appreciate their dedication, commitment and hard work.
