I read a letter "Can't sit through show? Don't go" (April 17). With my wife and her mother, I also attended the Merle Haggard concert at the Gallo Center. The problems recounted in the letter were true; however it goes deeper than that. First, there was no security. Next, the alcohol was flowing freely. I watched one bartender pour mixed drinks without using a shot glass; his customers were getting him to pour extra into each drink.
As we sat in the balcony, there was a small group of people making the concert unpleasant for those sitting around them. Nothing happened until a fight broke out. As the fight progressed, one of the combatants fell on my mother-in-law, injuring her back. Then, and only then, did anyone from the center appear. There was no way this older usher was going to stop a fight. The manager seemed totally unfazed.
Why is it that high schools have to pay for police presence at football games, where there is no alcohol, but the Gallo Center does not?
