I am writing in opposition to the governor's proposal to cut $386 million from the 23-campus California State University system. CSU is the solution to our state's economic challenges, not the problem. Every dollar the state invests in the CSU generates $4.41 in spending. The CSU, its students and graduates generated $3.11 billion in tax revenue in 2003. Cuts to the CSU mean it will be harder for students to get a college education. This will fall hardest on the underserved. Thousands of deserving students are already being turned away.
CSU is the future of California. By training our engineers, teachers, nurses, IT workers and other professionals, CSU develops the skilled work force California needs in order to continue to grow. Now is not the time to shortchange our future.
