Community outreach projects are commendable, as are good after-school programs and enhanced policing efforts. However, in a campaign to eradicate street gang violence, all are doomed because these efforts fail to acknowledge -- much less address -- the fundamental reality that street gangs are products of economic deprivations.
How many "documented" gang members live in Del Rio? Elimination of street gangs will never occur until the "have nots" enjoy the opportunity to join the ranks of those who "have."
Economic development is the key which unlocks the door to community security.
