It seems that the writer of "A Marine's disrespect for others' rights" (April 3, Letters) takes offense at the actions of ex-Marine Brandon Estes in his defense of the flag that he spent several years in the service of. Well, as retired military, I take offense to the manner in which Don Vance used the flag to show his disrespect for it. And I also offer that the same freedom that gives Vance the right to disrespect the flag also gives Estes the right to rescue it from being dishonored.
There are other ways to protest this war that do not cause our flag to be mistreated. As for Brandon, well, two tours in Iraq facing IEDs, suicide bombers, snipers and other means of mayhem designed to take his life and the lives of his fellow Marines has well prepared him for dealing with whatever threat should present itself. One more thing: Since it is difficult to determine from the signature whether the writer of the letter is a man or woman, I would be interested to know if he or she has spent any time at all in the defense of this country.
