In response to "McCain would leave retirees poor" (March 21, Letters): When are people going to get it through their thick heads that the privatization of Social Security would be a good thing?
If I had been allowed to invest the money using "dollar cost averaging" that I poured into the Social Security sinkhole during the past 50-plus years, I would be a wealthy man today.
The U.S. government did not invest that money for me; they spent it. I put in far more than I will ever get out of it.
It is a well-known fact that the stock market goes up over time.
Yes, it has its ups and downs, but over the past 50 years, it has gone up 10 percent a year on average. It could be set up like a 401(k) plan where mandatory deductions would be taken out each week, but we could direct where it was invested.
I know that privatization will never happen because the politicians can't keep their grubby hands off our money.
