We live in a time of unprecedented natural cataclysms, many of our own making. What if we began to regard the world as the body of God? Would it make any difference in our practices if we perceived all creation as the embodiment of God? God is hungry in the streets of Somalia, where famine due to unsound ecological actions or war on our part threatens the entire population. God is wheezing in the ruin of the rain forest and oceans, the lungs of the earth. God is bleeding in the packinghouses of the world so that man's waistline may grow larger and then he dies of heart problems. God is drowning as global warming raises the sea level. Although God said that he would never again destroy the world with a flood, man seems bent on his own destruction with water and the use of oil.
When will we understand that we must live simpler lives? How much will gas need to cost before we will slow down on the freeway? "Beam me up, Scottie!"
