Recent gloomy headlines, such as "Consider yourself lucky if employed" (March 8, Page A-1), are one of many reminders of the shortage of jobs in the Central Valley. It is nice to hear good news that the California Transportation Commission staff has endorsed funding for the West Park project.
Why is it so difficult for some to see that we need to find new ways to create more jobs for us locals? Since the housing market has fallen, many are left without income and look to the Bay Area for employment or rely on unemployment benefits or county assistance. We need to attract more jobs to our area.
That's why the Board of Supervisors should vote in favor of West Park. We should not rely on federal or state government to bring economic prosperity to our area. We can do it ourselves by turning the Crows Landing Naval Air Facility into an economic engine.
"Many new jobs in Stanislaus County" will become the new headline.
