The doctor told my sister the San Joaquin Valley air would eventually kill her. She had a cough for seven years. She was a ex-smoker. Air pollution led her to move to the San Juan Islands.
Seniors and children with developing lungs are most susceptible to the bad air that sometimes blankets this valley. The Bee reported that 18 percent of Fresno residents have respiration problems linked to poor air quality. Bakersfield is a cancer center, partly from the location of oil processing. The Tehachapi Mountains, the Sierra and the Coast Range trap polluted air.
Lawmakers mentioned their priorities in the March 9 issue (Page B-7). Only David Cogdill focused on air quality. London did not ban coal burning until hundreds were killed by smog in one week. Polluted air damages our children's lungs and kills us slowly with great discomfort. I cannot view burning anything if it damages our health. Cogdill should lead this fight to save lives and improve our health. Tell your representatives we may have to raise taxes to preserve our health. Or move to cleaner air. On the other hand, if you want to die early, move to Richmond, Martinez or Bakersfield.
