In reference to the letter "Segregationist Demos now GOP," (Feb. 1), the writer could not be more mistaken. In 1964, the Democratic- controlled Congress had a bill in front of it known as the "Civil Rights Act." Southern Democrats opposed it (including a certain senator from Tennessee, Al Gore Sr.). Without their vote, the northern Democrats could not pass it. The Republicans, who were in the minority, jumped in and voted for the Civil Rights Act, thus passing it. The same thing happened in 1965 with the "Fair Housing Act."
What was this about the GOP being segregationists? Let us be sure not to mention the Civil Rights Act of 1997, passed by a Republican Congress.
