Blessing goes a little too far

While I believe that it is admirable that St. Joseph's Catholic Church holds an annual Mass honoring first responders ("Honoring those who serve," Jan. 6, Page B-1), I think that both the church and the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department stepped over the line by allowing county vehicles to be blessed by Father Joseph Illo, as indicated in the caption with the photograph. In order to at least maintain the perception that all citizens are served equally by entities operated by Stanislaus County, it would be prudent to maintain a strictly secular relationship with the Catholic Church.
