I read that the Modesto, Sacramento and Fresno Bee newspapers are now outsourcing some advertising production work to India. In Modesto alone, five jobs are forever lost to a foreign country, plus more in Sacramento and Fresno. This action is deplorable, especially from a newspaper that vilified Hershey for moving its production to Mexico, costing our region millions of dollars in lost payroll and leaving hundreds out of work.
The Bee tried to downplay its actions by stating it only represents 1 percent of its workforce -- but could this be a harbinger of things to come? Stating that the change is based on serving customers more effectively, efficiently and economically is pure spin. This is about money, pure and simple. What a horrible message to send to your readers. I have always admired The Modesto Bee for its willingness to lead by example and for the most part tend to agree with its editorials. But I also believed that great newspaper companies were supposed to lead by example. In The Bee's case, it's, "Do as I say, not as I do."
