Spanish shouldn't be required

I would like to respond to "I have to speak Spanish to work?" (Nov. 3, Letters): I went through the same thing about two months ago; I was turned down for several jobs I was perfectly qualified for except for one thing, I only spoke English. It has even been suggested I take basic Spanish classes. When I've asked about others learning English, I've been told they are just preserving their heritage. I took it that as an American, I have no heritage.

My late father did not go off to war and fight for this country so I could learn another language. He did it so I wouldn't have to.
