Regarding the letter "Socialism never, ever works" (Oct. 29): The writer says socialism never has worked, and politicians striving to control our freedoms and liberties are leading America to failure. My wife and I have the finest socialized medicine in the world: Medicare. We pay about $200 a month for total coverage with a deductible of $100 each; our prescriptions cost very little.
In 2002, my wife needed two half-hour outpatient surgeries. For the first, the bill exceeded $4,000; for the second identical procedure, the bill was $800. The second time she had Medicare, which capped the bill and paid most of it. We have free choice of doctors; our coverage is guaranteed for life.
Those who control our freedom and liberties are not politicians; they are the insurance companies that cherry-pick healthier persons, delay or deny care after it was rendered, or drop coverage. Universal health coverage will take the profit motive out of exploiting human suffering. It will end the corruption of "politicians" the writer mentions. The right to good health should not be a commodity bought and sold by insurance companies.
"Freedom" is an illusion at best, a hoax at worst, foisted on people with clever propaganda. As Thomas Jefferson pointed out, the price of freedom is eternal vigilance.
