In response to "Teachers arrogant to ask for raise" (Oct. 23, Letters): Perhaps the writer doesn't realize that the raise will go to buying more supplies for the classroom. Most teachers I know don't feel that the school provides enough and they go out of their way to make their classroom their own. Failing schools aren't just due to possibly poor teachers, they're due to lack of equipment and the lack of the parents' responsibility to help teach their children.
I'm so tired of people blaming public schools for the lack of education that their kids possess. Maybe if parents made sure that their little angels were actually going to school every day, this wouldn't be a problem. If parents sat down and discussed school with their kids, maybe we could help the fact that some people just don't understand what they're being taught.
The biggest obstacle today is not the teachers, but the fact we believe it is only the teachers that can teach. It shouldn't be No Child Left Behind, it should be "it takes a village to raise a child" mentality that we look to.
