'Apathetic and selfish speciesists'

Regarding "Farm animals deserve more space" (Oct. 8, Letters): You asked what kind of people we are to allow this? I'll tell you what we are: Humans are speciesists. We care so little about other species that we allow them to be raised and slaughtered in atrocious conditions. We allow them to have their skins peeled from their bones -- sometimes without killing them first. We cause immeasurable suffering to dairy cows by keeping them in a cycle of pregnancy to make millions from their milk. Ever notice that we are the only species that drinks another species' milk?

So what are we? We are apathetic, selfish speciesists who follow what generations before us did without considering why we do those things. But who cares? They're just animals.
