Oil disputes likely to keep us in Iraq

While we remembered Sept. 11, the Texas- based Hunt Oil company signed a deal to explore for oil with the Kurdistan regional government, the body that runs Iraq's four northern provinces. The deal includes provisions for dispensing profits with the rest of Iraq, but the Iraqi government in Baghdad was upset. Perhaps this is an effort to force the Iraqis into forming an agreement to dispense oil profits among themselves. Until such an agreement is made, no oil profits can be shared. If the Kurds have a significant number of votes, do not expect such an agreement any time soon. We will not be out of Iraq soon, either.
