When the City Council raised parking fees at City Hall a while back, they excused themselves from the new rates but failed to exempt members of the public who wish to attend meetings. Participation in local government is important in our democratic system. Citizens can speak and be heard by our elected officials without the fear of reprisals, as is the case in many other parts of the world. Any attempt to usurp those rights must be taken seriously.
Making citizens pay to park during council meetings in a building they paid for is an unwarranted restriction of those rights. This avaricious policy should end without delay.
