Real villains in shelter drama

I read with dismay Susan Robinson's commentary attacking Mike McFarland, director of animal services ("County animal shelter director's hold time is up," Sept. 7, Page B-7). Attacking every director as a villain has not and will not improve the welfare of animals in Stanislaus County. Anyone who has looked objectively at animal services knows the real villains are irresponsible overbreeding of pets, insufficient and outdated buildings, and not enough money.

No real progress in improving the welfare of companion animals in Stanislaus County will be made until those who profess to be concerned about animals stop bickering and pledge to work together for the benefit of animals. They then need to agree on an action agenda and work together for its implementation.
