At least we know what it now costs to pick up our green waste. If we turn this service over to a private contractor, we can expect the cost to at least double, if not triple. Who will profit from this change? The contractor will most certainly make a profit. The city will make more money by collecting the fees for the private contractor. It seems the only ones to lose out will be us, the citizens of Modesto.
In the past, this service has been paid for out of our tax money. What will the city do with the funding for this service? Spend it on road repair? Increase police patrols? Reduce property taxes? Probably none of the above. We will not even get to vote on the issue.
Maybe we should just call it an under-the-table property tax increase.
