Wasden's hands tied by state law

"Safety first: More gun permits" (Sept. 1, Letters) hit the nail on the head. More and more states have realized that armed citizens actually reduce crime. The idea that the police will protect you is a myth. The police are there to take a report after a crime has already taken place. Sure, they try to get there in time to help you, but they can't be everywhere at once.

We in Modesto are lucky to have Roy Wasden as chief of police because he came from a state where it was illegal to deny a citizen with no criminal record a concealed weapons permit. Unfortunately, Wasden is forced to comply with California law that says you have to have a reason to carry and personal safety is not a valid reason.

Under the U.S. Constitution, we have the right to bear arms to protect ourselves. Lawmakers who violate that right are traitors. It's not the good people with guns that they should be afraid of, it's the criminals with guns, and criminals will always have guns.

Criminals smuggle tons of illegal drugs into the United States every day. Do you honestly believe they don't, or wouldn't, smuggle guns, too?
