Stores have no 'farmers markets'

What is a farmers market? What is a California certified farmers market? Lately, I have been seeing newspaper and TV commercials promoting in-store "farmers markets." It bothers me that people may be confusing this with the California Direct Marketing Program. In the program, the local county agricultural commissioner's inspectors go to the growers' fields to inspect and verify they are growing these crops. The certified farmers markets are also inspected from time to time to check that only such produce is being sold.

The state certified program was established because local farmers complained that their products were going too far away to wholesale markets and would return some to their local supermarkets a few weeks later. I am a little confused and hope others will add some enlightenment.
