Put our safety first: Build prisons

We need more prison beds and county jail beds. Yet, a recent story in The Bee ("Will valley fever stop prison building?" Aug. 16, Page A-8) talks about not building a prison due to fear of valley fever. I am less concerned about a prison inmate contracting valley fever than I am about that same inmate being set free due to a lack of prison beds. We need to be more concerned about the safety and security of law-abiding citizens. California has 36 million residents, but only 156,000 beds for prison inmates. With crime rampant, and people being let out of jail every day due to overcrowding, we should be building as many jails and prisons as we can. The sooner the better.
