I would like to thank the residents of Canterbury Estates in east Modesto for coming out Aug. 7 for National Night Out. Our potluck, the chalk murals by children, a water balloon toss and a visit from McGruff and the Modesto police were a huge success. I would encourage all Modesto residents to get together and meet one another.
Hopefully, next year The Bee will get out to some of the neighborhoods that participate, take pictures and get the word out that the Modesto police can issue permits to close the streets. Some very rude residents from an adjacent neighborhood yelled at us about closing the streets. They were under the delusion that we had special treatment because we were new to Modesto and pay big money in property taxes. Many of us are not new to Modesto. I have been living here since 1990.
Editor's note: The Bee attended several National Night Out activities, including Oregon Drive and César Chávez parks in Modesto and Smyrna Park in Ceres.
