Letters to the Editor

Death is not the penalty for shoplifting

Regarding the letter to the editor, "Will late suspect's family file a lawsuit?" (Aug. 9): It was presumptuous to assume that there would be a lawsuit filed by the family. I am not sure who made the letter writer the judge and jury who convicted this man for the alleged charges, but, as far as I know, death is not the usual punishment for shoplifting — and it should not be carried out by store employees. I thought in the United States we are judged by a jury of our peers. I am curious to know what this store's policy is regarding apprehending shoplifters.
